If Pud had a theme song to describe him these days, it would have to be most of the chorus to “I Wanna Be Like You (The Monkey Song)” from Disney’s The Jungle Book.
I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
He is sitting on his potty chairs when he has to go potty (but fully clothed, unless we helped him get undressed first), using his washcloths to wipe down furniture and his body, going up and down stairs with ease, using the broom and dustpan to clean the floors (with help), typing on the computer, talking on the phones (real or pretend), and drinking out of open glasses. That is pretty much the tip of the iceberg, as our kiddo is literally exploding with explorations and mimicry.
This is not limited to copying us. He copies the dogs, too. He has tried chewing the rawhides, playing fetch, growling and barking, drinking water from a bowl, playing in the dog beds and crates (who needs a playhouse?) and wearing a “collar” (one of those elastic headbands that look like a skinny sweatband).
His desire to mimic and learn to do everything we do is being encouraged as much as possible. Our efforts and patience are being rewarded! Pud is beginning to use words and signs to make requests. I’m especially delighted to report that we can ask the same questions in ASL or English and get consistent responses, too! Woo-hoo! It’s great to be ONE!
